【Donlow】A Better Me 读书笔记(1)

*摘抄Gary B先生最新自传A Better Me中对Howard D先生的全部评价

"Then he gets out this model book and points at this Greek god. 'I'm thinking of this guy, too. His name's Howard.'"

"This story's been told a million times, and the truth is it didn't feel like an audition to be in the biggest band in the world. For some of the lads, it felt like just another job. Howard arrived late from a modelling job — a model! I wanna be that, too."

——A BOY ON A MISSION

"I had Howard to thank for my running playlist. He'd started coming over to mine a bit and because he was DJ-ing a lot he'd play me some really good stuff. H didn't live far from me. His daughter Grace was born in 1999 just before our Dan in 2000. When we both had our kids I saw less of him. When we came up to breath after two kids I didn't really want to see anyone or look back at that point, but I love Howard, of course I wanted to see him. Howard would come round with old video footage of us in Taiwan hanging round in TV dressing rooms, taking the piss out of each other. We'd watch it and laugh. Howard loved these old vids because they reminded him of good times whereas they reminded me of lost time. Not that I said anthing; this footage watching a life I felt so far away from then was bittersweet. If you asked any of the band about nineties, he's the only one that said, 'Oh, I loved it. Every minute of it.'"

"I never talked with him about feeling shit about life in general. All I wanted was for everything to look under control. Howard's never looked anything less than a Greek god. No, I wasn't going to mention any battles with the scales to him. Those people who put on a couple of pounds at Christmas and lose it by February, by just eating less and exercising more, ......"

——…BUT EXERCISE IS NOT

"......Howard and I left that meeting thinking we knew something they didn't. No one care. Mark and Jay didn't even bother turning up."

"We showed Jay this pitch and ordered another round. Red wine for Jay, white for Mark, Howard's on the G'n'Ts, which is always a good sign because he never drinks. I'm on Jack Daniel's and Coke — Diet Coke, it goes without saying."

"In that moment I dared to dream. I think we all did. I looked at Howard. I knew he was thinking the same. ......"

——FOUR SPARKLY SHIRTS

"Howard and Jason brought Apache to the table way back in the early days; it's a famous breakbeat from eighties that every breakdancer knows. That's their heritage, that is, and it demands monvment. ......"

"On the Ultimate Tour, Kim kept us apart on stage and made Howard her partner on stage. Dawn used to say, 'Poor Howard, stuck with the old lady while the rest of you get fresh girlies.'"

"......Look the other way and I see Howard from Droylsden singing his heart out and punching the air. Behind him, another 5,000 people. ......"

"I never feel sexy, not in that way Howard can pull off with his six pack and all that; it's natural to him. Hie's an extremely sexy guy. I've never felt like that. ......"

"Howard had his fair share of ideas but most crucially played the role of arbiter. He's naturally got fantastic taste in music, he's hot great style, he's a dancer so he always knows a truthful expression. He'd swiftly dispatch any bogus posturing or try-hard ideas. No one understands the Take That brand like he does; he mentally puts himself in the audience and they always come first for him. The final word belongs to Howard."

——JUST ONE MORE

"This is how the yo-yoing would go. When we toured I would be off the diets because I thought if I'm sitting near Howard I won't put weight on because he never dose. I'll eat the same as him: nice fat hotel club sandwich with the crisps on the plate at two in the morning. It'll be fine. Lo and behold, I'd come off tour a stone heavier."(lol

——BLOOD, SWEAT AND PATIENCE

"Eventually it was brilliantly chaotic in the studio. we're in this split-level room witha spiral staircase with access to the roof so Mark and Howard can smoke. Often there'sd be three songs being written at once. Jay's on the laptop, doing lyrics. Howard would be hitting the pads on the drum machine, Mark's on guitar."

——FOUR GO MAD AT SARM
